Trinity Sunday
The centre of the image contains the Scutum Sancte Trinitatis (Shield of the Holy Trinity), a figure that appears to date from the 12th century. Above the shield is a head that portrays the three persons of the Trinity. The four corners of the image contain the symbols and names of the four Evangelists, John, Matthew, Luke and Mark.
A similar head with three faces appears carved in stone in the Chapter House of Salisbury Cathedral.

The image in the block capital (taken from the 1513 Missal) appears to be David beholding an angel: ‘And David lifting up his eyes, saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand . . .’ (1 Chronicles 21:16). This appears to have no reference to the Feast of the Trinity. It may be that the image was originally designed as the initial letter of a Psalter: ‘Beatus vir . . .’.
The melody is taken from the Officium for Lent 1.
The Officium, Gradual, Offertory, and Communion all conclude with the same text-phrase: ‘qui fecit nobiscum misericordiam suam.’ This would suggest that these texts were composed as a group by a single person.

According to Miri Rubin, Corpus Christi: The Eucharist in Late Medieval Culture (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1991): 212, this indulgence was granted in 1369 and renewed in 1371.
The image represents the ‘Arma Christi’, the instruments of the Passion.
The images include: the Cock, the Pillar, the Whip, the Cords, the Spitting Face of Mockery, the Chalice, the Nails, the Crown of Thorns, the Hand which slapped Jesus’ Face, the Hammer, the Lance, the Cross, the Thirty Pieces of Silver hanging from the neck of Judas, the Pincers, the Lantern, the Seamless Robe, the Dice, the Sponge.
The purpose of the Sheaf of Wheat is unclear; the plant is possibly Hyssop, or the Reed.
Unidentified is the coil to the right of the cross above the head of Judas.
‘When a new feast was introduced a Mass already in use was applied with its text and music to the new feast. Sometimes the melodies of one Mass were adapted to the words of a new Mass. Examples of these two processes may be seen in the Mass of the Blessed Sacrament. Here the Introit (Cibavit eos) is the same as that of the older Mass for the Monday following Pentecost. The Gradual is that of the twentieth Sunday after Pentecost. Sundays after Trinity
The Use of Sarum provides for 25 different Sunday masses to be used from the First Sunday after Trinity until Advent. These masses are to be accommodated into Kalendars, itemized as ‘brief’, breve, when there are 22 or 23 Sundays; ‘average’, equale,when there are 24 or 25; and ‘lengthy’, prolixum, when there are 26 or 27. (Crede michi §123 (Maydeston Tracts:65)).
The 25th mass is to be used for the high mass on the Sunday next before Advent, unless Sunday falls on the feast of St. Cecilia (Nov. 22), St. Clement (Nov. 23), or St. Catherine (Nov. 25), in which case the feast takes precedence of the Sunday. In such cases the 25th Sunday mass will be said either as the high mass on a feria of the ensuing week, or as the chapter mass on the Sunday itself.
Whilst the BCP and Missale Romanum (1962) direct that unused Sunday collects, epistles and Gosples between Epiphany and Septuagesima are to be used for the additional Sunday masses when the time is lengthy, in the Sarum Use these unused masses are in fact said as the high mass or as the chapter mass on weekdays before Septuagesima, and not on Sundays at the conclusion of Trinitytide.
Instead, Sarum takes advantage of the fact that a number of Sundays in Trinitytide in any given year will be given over to important feasts or ruled octaves. While some such masses may be said as during the week, either as a high mass or a chapter mass, others will be deferred to a following Sunday, thus shifting the remainder of the Sundays after Trinity to one or even two weeks past their normal date. This situation will occur in years D-1, E-1, F-1, G-1, A-1, B-1, C-1, D-2, E-2, F-2, G-2, and A-2, a total of 12 of the possible years. In the 5 years D-1, E-1, F-1, G-1 and A-1, two Sundays will have to be so deferred; in the other 7 years, only one Sunday.
The most convenient places to do this are during the octaves of the Assumption and Nativity of the BVM. When this occurs, the Sunday(s) in question, and all the other Sundays until Advent, will be deferred by a week.
For example, in year D-1 Sunday, August 16, (properly the 13th Sunday after Trinity), falls within the ruled octave of the Assumption. August 16 will be observed as a day within the Octave of the Assumption, and the 13th Sunday will be observed on Sunday August 23 (which is properly the 14th Sunday after Trinity). From that point forward, the following Sundays will continue under this new, deferred arrangement until Sunday September 13 (properly the 17th Sunday after Trinity, which falls within the ruled octave of the Nativity of the Virgin. September 13 will be observed as a day within the Octave of the Nativity of the Virgin, and the 16th Sunday will no be observed two weeks later than its nominal date, on September 20 (which is properly the 18th Sunday after Trinity). From that point forward, the following Sundays will continue under this new, deferred arrangement of two weeks, until November 15, which will be observed as the 24th Sunday after Trinity. The same thing would happen with E-1, F-1, G-1, A-1, and B-1.
However, C-1 is a special case. In C-1, August 15, a Sunday, is observed as the Feast of the Assumption, but also August 23, a Sunday, is observed as the Octave of the Assumption. In this case, the Sunday falling on August 15 (properly the 13th Sunday after Trinity) will be deferred, but it will not be observed as the high mass on the following Sunday, August 23 (because that is the Octave of the Assumption); rather the 13th Sunday will be observed as a ‘missa in capitulo’, presumably on Sunday, August 23. And on Sunday, August 30, the 14th Sunday will then be observed as the high mass.
A similar procedure would occur also during the Octave of the Nativity of the BVM in Years F-1 and F-2, when that feast falls on a Sunday.
It would seem to be most convenient if when only one such deferral from Sunday to Sunday is required, that it would take place during the week of the Nativity of the BVM rather than the week of the Assumption, thus causing a disruption only during the final portion of the year.
Having provided the above discussion as a practical first step to handling this issue, I may say that the various hints and rubrics seem to provide a daunting array of possibilities and contingencies that I have yet to digest and consolidate.
Of course the Expositions of the Gospels at Matins must be coordinated with these modifications as closely as possible.
First Sunday after Trinity
In the Roman Use this Mass is known as First Sunday after Pentecost. It is used on vacant ferias in the Week of the Trinity. The Dominican and Rouen Uses employ the same terminology as the Sarum Use. The York Missal uses the style ‘Dominica prima post octavas Penthecostes’ (First Sunday after the octave of Pentecost).

(‘Dextera Domini’ is a variant of ‘Dextera Dei’.) It will be observed that from Trinity 6-10 the Sarum Alleluyas appear in Hereford one week later; from Trinity 11-16 they are the same; and from Trinity 19-22 they are again one week later. From Trinity 3-5 the Sarum Alleluyas appear in York one week later; from Trinity 6-12 they appear 3 weeks later; Trinity 14-15 appear 2 weeks later; Trinity 20-22 appear two weeks later. York demonstrates agreement with Rome in weeks 5-10.

Generally the order remains the same, but often simply one or two Sundays later through the inclusion of ‘Propitius esto’ and ‘Timebunt gentes’, and the omission of ‘Letatus sum’ and ‘Lauda anima’.

The Sarum post-Pentecost Alleluya series is even more closely aligned with the Rouen Use. In the Rouen Missal 1495 Trinity 1-5 and 19-23 are the same; 6-17 (as in the Hereford Use) appear 1 Sunday later due to the addition of ‘Alleluya. Omnes gentes’ on Trinity 6; ‘Alleluya. Letatus sum’ is omitted. Trinity 24 and 25 repeat the Alleluya of Trinity 23.
In sum, these observations attest to close associations of Sarum with the Hereford, Rouen, and Dominican traditions, and potentially reflect a special relationship between York and Rome.
